Horizon League conference tournament

This is part 12 of a 32-part series previewing every conference tournament in the country.  We'll detail what you need to keep track of in each tournament and the various stakes for each team.

The standings:
Oakland 14-4
Valparaiso 14-4
Green Bay 12-6
Northern Kentucky 12-6
Wright St 11-7
Illinois-Chicago 7-11
Detroit 6-12
Cleveland St 5-13
Youngstown St 5-13
Milwaukee 4-14

Tournament format:
Friday March 3 to Tuesday March 7.  Yeah, a 5-day tournament.  Quarterfinals last both Saturday and Sunday.  Sigh.  It's at a neutral site in Detroit.

The matchups:
1) Oakland vs. 8/9) Cleveland St/Youngstown St
4) Northern Kentucky vs. 5) Wright St
3) Green Bay vs. 6) Illinois-Chicago
2) Valparaiso vs. 7/10) Detroit/Milwaukee

The stakes:
First, let's briefly touch on Valpo and Alec Peters, the best player in the conference, just now out for the season.  If Valpo wins this tournament, they're going to get punished in seeding for losing Peters.  Probably down to the 15 line, by my best estimation.  You can throw almost their entire resume out the window.  Their top 50 win over URI, out.  Wins over Bama and BYU, out.  Their loss to NKU late, counts.  Not good for Valpo.  Oakland ran them down to take the 1 seed, so Valpo has lost their NIT bid because of the Peters injury.  This is a harsh take, but that doesn't mean it's true.  Sorry Valpo.

Horizon was RPI 17, not great.  Oakland sits right at RPI 100, and is really going to have a tough time getting better than a 14 seed.  Poor non-con SoS, modestly helped by a win over Georgia.  Could be a 13 if they get enough upsets elsewhere.  Everyone else is down in 15 seed range.  Horizon League is down a little bit compared to most years.  A few teams with decent RPIs, but they usually hope for more Top 100 teams most years.  Also, that Valpo/Peters thing is a legitimate buzzkill.

There's a pretty clear top half/bottom half in the league...and I'd expect all in the top 5 to have the CBI/CIT come calling in the worst-case scenario.

Man, Valpo.  That's a bummer.  Would win this tourney and be a 13 seed (maybe even 12!) with Peters....15 seed without.  But Oakland might win this tournament anyways.

Southern Conference tournament preview

This is part 11 of a 32-part series previewing every conference tournament in the country.  We'll detail what you need to keep track of in each tournament and the various stakes for each team.

The standings:
UNC Greensboro 14-4
Furman 14-4
East Tennessee St 14-4
Chattanooga 10-8
Wofford 10-8
Mercer 9-9
Samford 8-10
Western Carolina 4-14
The Citadel 4-14
VMI 3-15

Tournament format:
Friday March 3 to Monday March 6.  Neutral site in Asheville.  Straight-up tournament.

The matchups:
1) UNC Greensboro vs. 8/9) Western Carolina/The Citadel
4) Chattanooga vs. 5) Wofford
3) East Tennessee St vs. 6) Mercer
2) Furman vs. 7/10) Samford/VMI

The stakes:
SoCon sits at RPI, one of their better years.  Chattanooga over Tennessee is their signature win, and they held their own mostly against over low-majors.  Speaking in generalities, there's a lot of conferences ranked below them with champs with very good RPIs.  So seeding this conference champ will be a balance of how highly you rate the conference vs. how highly you rate the individual team.  For example, UNCG is sitting on RPI 100 which says 15 seed; but is sitting in conference #15 which says #13 seed.

Greensboro's got the NIT bid.  They also have 4 top 100 wins, but 3 of those in conference.  ETSU only has 1 top 100 win despite a RPI around 70 (for this reason, their NIT chance is probably low at best).  Furman is meh too.  My instinct says any of them are destined for the 14 line.

Down further, Chattanooga's resume is good enough to make a CBI/CIT, and Samford is eligible for it too, but further down the standings.  Wofford or Mercer need two wins to be eligible.  Someone, somewhere cares, I suppose.  However, Furman and ETSU are very safe bets for these tournaments, at least.

3/2 S-CURVE

Too many changes and minor shifts in the middle of the bracket.

I've been looking for reasons to boot Cal from the bracket; I got it.  Kansas St also sneaks back in.  For that last spot, Vandy/GaTech/Wake is a pretty healthy argument that can go in any direction.  You could justify any of the 3.  Today feels like a Wake day.  To me right now, there's a fair distance between these teams and Illinois, who's next up.

3/1 recap

Pac-12:
@UCLA 98, Washington 66
@USC 87, Washington St 64

Big 12:
@Texas Tech 67, Texas 57
Kansas St 75, @TCU 74 - TCU is just about cooked here.  Even I hated putting them as close to the field as I did, and now they're really gone.  Road wins are never trivial, and boy KSU needed it.  Not even close to safe yet, though

Big East:
Marquette 95, @Xavier 84 - road wins are never trivial.  Even over a massively sliding Xavier, who is now in legit bubble trouble.  The good news is they have DePaul left, so a loss there would make things a lot clearer for everyone

ACC:
@Wake Forest 88, Louisville 81 - everyone wants to talk bubble.  Let's talk 1 line.  This is a serious dent to UL's hopes to catch anyone on the one line.  It's really starting to feel like it's going to be Gonzaga, UNC, and the Pac-12 champ for 2 spots right now.  Can't see anyone else making a run to get there, and the road is too uphill for Louisville now
@Notre Dame 82, Boston College 66
@Clemson 78, NC State 74 - go away, Clemson

SEC:
@Florida 78, Arkansas 65
@Georgia 79, Auburn 78 - I thought we killed Georgia's hopes awhile ago.  I guess we'll need to revive the resume, although I doubt it gets close
@LSU 92, Tennessee 82 - ahahahahahaha
@Alabama 70, Ole Miss 55 - a double elimination game, in that I'm eliminating both teams from bubble contention no matter the outcome of this game

B1G:
@Northwestern 67, Michigan 65 - Michigan isn't home free yet...really could've used another road win to reach the lockbox
@Illinois 73, Michigan St 70 - huh.  So this Illinois thing is really going down.  We're going to have to address this.  This is a real thing that is happening, Illinois back on the bubble

A-10:
@Dayton 79, VCU 72 - Dayton to the lockbox.  VCU will be fine as long as they don't lose to a minnow
Rhode Island 68, @St Joseph's 49 - okay, I'll concede URI is in play again.  Still not in the field but a viable option for the time being.  Still not sure there's enough firepower on their schedule to get them into the field
Richmond 75, UMass 64

MWC:
Nevada 82, @San Jose St 67

NEC quarterfinals:
Mount St Mary's 76, Sacred Heart 73
Wagner 72, Fairleigh Dickinson 70
St Francis(PA) 100, Bryant 78
Robert Morris 69, LIU 68 - there goes the 2 seed, the path clears somewhat for MSM

AEast quarterfinals:
Vermont 86, Maine 41
Stony Brook 70, Binghamton 60
New Hampshire 74, UMBC 65
Albany 100, Hartford 71 - service holds for the top 4 seeds here

OVC first round:
SE Missouri St 78, Tennessee St 75 (OT)
Murray St 85, Tennessee Tech 84

Colonial Athletic Association conference tournament

This is part 10 of a 32-part series previewing every conference tournament in the country.  We'll detail what you need to keep track of in each tournament and the various stakes for each team.

The standings:
UNC Wilmington 15-3
Charleston 14-4
Towson 11-7
William & Mary 10-8
Elon 10-8
Northeastern 8-10
James Madison 7-11
Hofstra 7-11
Delaware 5-13
Drexel 3-15

Tournament format:
4 days, from Friday March 3 to Monday March 6.  It's at a "neutral" site in Charleston, but not on Charleston's actual home court.

The matchups:
1) UNC Wilmington vs. 8/9) Hofstra/Delaware
4) William & Mary vs. 5) Elon
3) Towson vs. 6) Northeastern
2) Charleston vs. 7/10) James Madison/Drexel

The stakes:
CAA was RPI 11, sneaking ahead of the MVC and breaking up the traditional "Big 11" as I like to refer to from time to time.  A very solid year overall for the conference, but it won't pay off in any at-large bids.  UNCW currently sits on RPI 38 and on 5 RPI 51-100 wins.  However, 2 are RPI 99 Towson, and another is 96 Bonaventure and another is 70 ETSU.  Despite having a solid non-con SoS, they didn't nab a win over a team that's even close to the tourney.  Their signature win is @Charleston.  That's just not enough, even though every other metric is great.  If we're picking mid-majors, I'm probably grabbing teams with better signature wins (see:  Illinois St) if I had to choose.  And it's a shame.  But the current committee emphasis is quality wins over tourney teams, and UNC-W just don't have them.

Charleston is a bubble team of their own (NIT bubble).  Traditionally, a league as good as this will have their 2nd place team in legit NIT contention, give or take.  They kind of suffer from the same thing UNC-W does, though, although they beat UNCW and also beat Boise.  I'm interested to see how the NIT handles them; it could be a bellweather going forward for how the NIT treats mid-majors.

We can pencil in Towson for a postseason bid somewhere.  Elon, Bill & Mary are also eligible and likely invites based on overall resume.  Northeastern needs one win to be CIT eligible; it's a shame they finished 6th.  Won at UConn, won at Vermont (!), won at Michigan St, lost 10 times in the CAA.  Dammit.

West Coast Conference tournament preview

This is part 9 of a 32-part series previewing every conference tournament in the country.  We'll detail what you need to keep track of in each tournament and the various stakes for each team.

The standings:
Gonzaga 17-1
St Mary's 16-2
BYU 12-6
Santa Clara 10-8
San Francisco 10-8
Loyola Marymount 8-10
San Diego 6-12
Pepperdine 5-13
Pacific 4-14
Portland 2-16

Tournament format:
Friday March 3 to Tuesday March 7.  They skip Sunday because lol BYU.  No double byes or anything funky.  Neutral site in Vegas.

The matchups:
1) Gonzaga vs. 8/9) Pepperdine/Pacific
4) Santa Clara vs. 5) San Francisco
3) BYU vs. 6) Loyola Marymount
2) St Mary's vs. 7/10) San Diego/Portland

The stakes:
I wonder if people are ignorant of Gonzaga's resume.  11 Top 100 wins, but what really matters is signature wins over N-Florida (really @Florida) and N-Arizona.  Iowa St helps too.  St Mary's 2x helps too.  But the two high-end wins show they're competent against elite teams, and is the key to the argument for a 1 seed.  I think they take the 1 seed, barring a stupid loss to anyone other than St Mary's, IMO.  Now, which 1 seed may be an argument, and Oregon can still take the West regional away by running the table, perhaps.  Would Gonzaga prefer to be a 2 seed out west than a 1 seed in the South?

(pet peeve:  all the talking heads saying the competition for a 1 seed in the West is between Gonzaga and the Pac-12, and that UNC has the South wrapped up.  NO.  BOTH Gonzaga AND the Pac-12 champ can be 1 seeds.  You idiots)

St Mary's seed could vary wildly.  @Dayton is the best win, which is good enough to make the field, but may not help seeding that much.  I can argue anywhere from a 5 to a 10 for them.  They sneakily only played 2 road games and 1 neutral in the non-con, which doesn't look good for a mid major.  That they won all 3 do help mask that flaw, though.  Frankly, I think they got lucky with their SoS, as Stanford, Nevada, and UTA have all helped out more than you'd think.  I'm having a tough time pinning down a seed for them, and I expect many people to miss their predictions on their seed.

Deeper down, BYU probably clinched a NIT bid by beating Gonzaga.  San Francisco despite a top 100 RPI will likely fall short of that and will join Santa Clara and Loyola Marymount in a CBI/CIT tournament.

3/1 S-CURVE

Bracket Matrix primer:  only change is Georgia Tech into the field as an 11 seed, in Kansas St's spot.  There's going to be some whimsy over the next few days between the last 4 in/last 4 out spots.

Even as I type, I want to take Vandy and Cal out, I'm thinking there's no way they get a bid.  Then I look at KSU and Marquette and can't physically bring myself to put them in.  I don't know what to do.  Rooting for Vandy to lose again to make my job easier.
