This is part 22 of a 32-part series that will take a look at every conference and conference tournament in the country. We'll recap who's playing and what the stakes are for each team in the conference.
The standings:
San Diego St 16-2 (23-8)
Fresno St 13-5 (22-9)
Boise St 11-7 (20-11)
New Mexico 10-8 (17-14)
Nevada 10-8 (18-12)
Colorado St 8-10 (16-15)
UNLV 8-10 (17-14)
Wyoming 7-11 (14-17)
Utah St 7-11 (15-14)
Air Force 5-13 (14-17)
San Jose St 4-14 (9-21)
Tournament format:
Vegas hosts, Wednesday March 9 to Saturday March 12, everyone going.
The matchups:
1) San Diego St vs. 8/9) Wyoming/Utah St
4) New Mexico vs. 5) Nevada
2) Fresno St vs. 7/10) UNLV/Air Force
3) Boise St vs. 6/11) Colorado St/San Jose St
The stakes:
A catastrophic year for the league, plummeting to 12th in the conference RPI. This means that only San Diego St represented anything resembling a quality win for resume building purposes. Alas, San Diego St can't play itself. They ended up with a 16-2 conference mark that is a lot of empty calories. They've got one signature win over Cal and a whole lot of nothing behind it. Basically, they're Wichita St without the injury excuse and the advanced metrics. I can see the argument for them being in, but I'm not enthusiastic about it.
The big issue is that no one team is even close to the bubble. The second place team, has exactly one Top 100 win, over SDSU. Can you even make the NIT off of that resume? It'll be close. Boise actually has the signature wins ('sup, Oregon) but some bad losses, and I think the NIT will just take the team higher in the conference standings if push comes to shove. They might take neither, though. Either way, they're well off the NCAA bubble pace.
To make matters worse, this conference could flood the other postseason tourneys. I count 5 teams behind the top 3 above .500, and all more or less deserve some kind of postseason when you compare their resumes against the rest of the country (well, New Mexico and Nevada and UNLV at least; CSU and USU are more marginal cases). However, for a league like the MWC, flooding these other tournaments probably isn't the look they're going for.

Big 12 conference tournament preview
This is part 21 of a 32-part series that will take a look at every conference and conference tournament in the country. We'll recap who's playing and what the stakes are for each team in the conference.
The standings:
Kansas 15-3 (27-4)
West Virginia 13-5 (24-7)
Oklahoma 12-6 (24-6)
Texas 11-7 (20-11)
Baylor 10-8 (21-10)
Iowa St 10-8 (21-10)
Texas Tech 9-9 (19-11)
Kansas St 5-13 (16-15)
Oklahoma St 3-15 (12-19)
TCU 2-16 (11-20)
Tournament format:
Kansas City, Wednesday March 9 to Saturday March 12.
The matchups:
1) Kansas vs. 8/9) Kansas St/Oklahoma St
4) Texas vs. 5) Baylor
2) West Virginia vs. 7/10) Texas Tech/TCU
3) Oklahoma vs. 6) Iowa St
The stakes:
Kansas is the #1 overall seed. Deal with it.
Can Oklahoma get to the 1 line? I can see it. Beat Kansas first, though, win this conference tournament. Then a 1 line of Kansas, Oklahoma, ACC champ, and Big East champ? That works. I want to say they'd have a 90% chance of the 1 line this way. With any loss, they're probably stuck on the 2 line. West Virginia is a trickier case because the non-con resume isn't that great. I think the 1 line is out of reach for this reason, but their peak can still be the 2 line. A bad loss can drop them to the 4 line, perhaps.
Let's look at the Iowa St/Baylor/Texas hierarchy for the moment. I think Baylor is a half-step behind the other two at the moment. They don't have the same high-end wins as the other two. Of course, Baylor and Texas play each other. So Baylor has one chance to make up ground. Between Texas and Iowa St, I'm starting to lean towards Texas maybe. Better SoS, just a couple more quality wins...but it's pretty razor thin. Obviously ISU can help itself with another signature win, but Texas has a more manageable quarterfinal game. In the end, I think you can argue for either ISU or Texas being higher and it'd be reasonable. Why is this important, though? Because I think there's room for one of these (or maybe both!) on the 4 line. And if either runs the table this week...is the 2 line reachable? I mean, an Iowa St run through OU/WVU/KU, or a Texas run through Baylor/KU/OU...think about it.
Texas Tech is probably safe. As much as I see through their fraudulent computer numbers...there's enough quality wins here.
Will the NIT take a 5-13 Big 12 team as an at-large? In the end, I'm guessing not. Sorry, K-State.

SWAC conference tournament preview
This is part 19 of a 32-part series that will take a look at every conference and conference tournament in the country. We'll recap who's playing and what the stakes are for each team in the conference.
The standings:
Texas Southern 16-2 (17-13)
Alcorn St 13-5 (15-14)
Jackson St 12-6 (17-14)

Alabama A&M 6-12 (10-17)
Arkansas-Pine Bluff 6-12 (8-24)
Grambling St 4-14 (7-23)
Tournament format:
Improvement for the league: only Alcorn St is APR'd this year. However, all 10 teams are going to Houston. Tuesday March 8 to Saturday March 12.
The matchups:
1) Texas Southern vs. 8/9) Alabama A&M/Arkansas-Pine Bluff
4) Southern vs. 5) Alabama St
2) Alcorn St vs. 7/10) Mississippi Valley St/Grambling
3) Jackson St vs. 6) Prairie View A&M
The stakes:
Who cares, they're all going to Dayton no matter who wins. There's actually two other teams over .500; the CIT can invite them at their own peril. That's all I got here. TSU doesn't have the resume like it had last year.
The standings:

Big East conference tournament preview
This is part 20 of a 32-part series that will take a look at every conference and conference tournament in the country. We'll recap who's playing and what the stakes are for each team in the conference.
The standings:
Villanova 16-2 (27-4)

Marquette 8-10 (19-12)
Georgetown 7-11 (14-17)
DePaul 3-15 (9-21)
St John's 1-17 (8-23)
Tournament format:
C'mon, you know this. MSG. New York City. Wednesday-Saturday, March 9-12.
The matchups:
1) Villanova vs. 8/9) Georgetown/DePaul
4) Providence vs. 5) Butler
2) Xavier vs. 7/10) Marquette/St John's
3) Seton Hall vs. 6) Creighton
The stakes:
Is Villanova secure on the 1 line? I can gin up a scenario where they lose to Xavier, who jumps up along with ACC champ UNC/Virginia and B1G champ Michigan St. Also Oklahoma can be in play. Odds are they can hang onto their 1 seed win or lose here, but it's not 100% safe. As for Xavier, I can see a scenario where they win it all and get a 1 seed...and win it all and get a 2 seed...or lose and get a 3 seed. The action on the 1 line is more fluid than usual this year. It would be beneficial for everyone is Villanova and Xavier get to the final, because it's going to be tough to miss the 1 line completely, no matter who wins that.
Rooting interests for the conference? Probably anyone but Michigan St in the B1G, to knock that conference out of 1 line consideration. The ideal roadmap for this conference is Kansas winning the Big 12 title, UNC or Virginia winning the ACC, and not Michigan St winning the B1G. This leaves two spots for 1 seeds, one likely for their champion.
Seton Hall and Providence are playing for seeding. I'll put the range for both from 6-10.
Butler. They're not in the greatest of spots, and their non-con SoS well into the 200s is an issue. They should prefer to beat Provi, just to lock themselves in. But the good news is they can't absorb a bad loss. The verdict: a loss leaves them vulnerable to getting jumped by other teams below. There's 8 teams between them and my cutline, but it wouldn't take much for several of those teams to jump (one quality win in a conference tournament could do it).
Creighton's a NIT bubble team, I think they might get there based on the .500 conference record. Marquette is probably not making the NIT (much worse metrics). Usually these teams avoid the CBI/Vegas type tournaments, but Marquette might be willing (and heck, the organizers might call up Georgetown, you never know).
The standings:
Villanova 16-2 (27-4)
Xavier 14-4 (26-4)
Seton Hall 12-6 (22-8)
Providence 10-8 (22-9)
Butler 10-8 (21-9)

Marquette 8-10 (19-12)

3/6 recap
@Indiana 80, Maryland 62 - Indiana starting to pile up wins to justify a 2 seed...that's probably their ceiling. Mary's ceiling is a 3, maybe a 4 now. Not a good spot for them
@Purdue 91, Wisconsin 80 - status quo for both
@Cincinnati 61, SMU 54 - okay, a signature win. Still don't know what to do with the whole damn conference
@UConn 67, Central Florida 46
Temple 64, @Tulane 56 - road wins are never trivial. Okay, maybe this one is
NITWatch: Penn St and Northwestern win again...I think Northwestern has a legit shot here
MVC finals:
Northern Iowa 56, Evansville 54 - someone tell me what the hell to do with UNI. Seriously
Big South finals:
UNC-Asheville 77, Winthrop 68
A-Sun finals:
FGCU 80, Stetson 78 (OT)
CAA semifinals:
Hofstra 70, William & Mary 67
UNC-Wilmington 73, Northeastern 70 - the CAA get their 2 co-champs into the finals
MAAC semifinals:
Monmouth 76, Fairfield 63
Iona 81, Siena 70 - the 2 seed is through to play Monmouth
SoCon semifinals:
Chattanooga 73, Western Carolina 69
East Tennessee St 84, Furman 76
Patriot semifinals:
Holy Cross 60, Army 38
Lehigh 78, American 62
Summit quarterfinals:
North Dakota St 60, IUPUI 45
Denver 78, Omaha 70
Horizon second round:
Green Bay 70, Milwaukee 61
Wright St 82, Detroit 72 - okay, the Horizon got their 3/4 seeds through to the semis
